Changes needed for the Department of Insurance

I have talked about problems with NCDOI rate structure and the Commissioner not accepting responsibility for the rates leaping forward after he gave them permission to do so. Let’s look at proposals needed to improve NCDOI:

1. Audit NCDOI – There are many financial question but no audit in ten years

2. Standardize contracts – Very few citizens understand the language and therefore no way to know how to compare contracts/rates/services

3. Require Insurance Education in High School

4. For inquiries require Department response within 3 days and a solution offered with-in 60 days, when possible. Excuses must be detailed

5. Attack fraud at all levels. Current fraud cases amount to $12,000 average. Meanwhile NOTHING is done on a $1,000,000 reported case.

6. Mediation department for claims settlement

7. Build a better relationship with the NC Legislators

8. Accept the responsibility to control insurance rates–by law the NCDOI should; MAINTAIN FAIR PRICING FOR INSURANCE PRODUCTS, PREVENT UNFAIR PRACTICES, and ENSURE AVAILABILITY OF INSURANCE COVERAGE

9. Bring health insurance back to state control, health insurance is now controlled by The Market Place, Healthcare.gov

10. Advisory Board limited to 15 people from different professions (example-homebuilder, fireman, teacher, realtor…) different geographic areas (Coastal, Piedmont, Mountain) to consult with on a quarterly basis. As the statutes say the Commissioner still has final approval.

I do not have a magic wand but I do have experience working together and solving problems. I ask for your support as we work together for the good of North Carolina.
